In this story 7 parts
Starface made acne care something you wear. The homepage never says what a Hydro-Star does.
What they get right
- A mascot that talks to you like a friend.
- A clinical result with its sample size printed right under it.
- A formula update sold like a new drop.

The product writes you a note
Halfway down the homepage, between price tiles, the yellow compact talks: “omg hi :)” and then “just wanted 2 say that ur a star + i’m so lucky 2 have u in my world”1.
Big Yellow has been the brand’s mascot since 2019, an alien who doesn't get why people are hard on themselves about acne3. It turns a medical product into a character people want to post, and every post is reach Starface didn't pay for.

The study size sits right under the result
The product page leads its proof with three numbers: “87% saw a noticeable difference in 6 hours,” 81% said the patches stayed put, and 4 out of 5 said the breakout stopped getting worse. Directly under them: “based on a 23-subject clinical study over 5 days”2.
Most brands bury the sample size or skip it. Printing 23 next to 87% is the kind of honesty a skeptical teen, or their parent, actually trusts.

A reformulation, sold like a drop
Right under the product name, before the price, the buy box says “improved star formula. same cute look.” and lists three changes: “2x stickier,” “50% more absorbent” and “easier to apply” with new perforated sheets2.
Most brands change a formula quietly and hope nobody notices. Starface turns it into a reason for a past buyer to try again, in the spot where the decision happens.

The star has a job
The cute part has a reason. Under “special shape,” the page explains that the star’s “lil arms are great for reaching spots in tight or awk spaces, like the corner of your nose or side of your lip”2.
That's the line a rival can't copy without copying the shape. It turns the look into a feature, so the brand never has to choose between fun and function.

A beauty editor who stopped hiding pimples
Julie Schott, a former Elle beauty editor, and Brian Bordainick launched Starface in 2019. The patches before them from Hero and Peace Out were skin-toned or clear, built to hide a pimple. Starface made them bright yellow stars you wear on purpose3.
The look carries the whole idea: yellow, black, lowercase type and a smiling compact. About 60% of customers are Gen Z and Gen Alpha, and retail sales have outpaced the brand’s own store3. Collabs keep it in the culture, most recently a custom pack fronted by Beabadoobee and May Hong of KPop Demon Hunters6.
Where they are now
As of Oct 11, 2026, the store is live and selling Hydro-Stars + Big Yellow at $14.992, seven months after a $105 million minority round led by Astō Consumer Partners and Align Ventures4, with salicylic acid patches and strips added in August5.
Put the title-tag line on the first screen
The clearest sentence Starface owns is in the browser tab: “Starface Pimple Patches Shrink Spots Overnight”1. The homepage itself opens on a grid of product tiles with no headline, which is why first impression is its lowest area at 59. Fans who found Big Yellow on TikTok don't need it. The friend they sent the link to does. One line above the grid costs nothing, keeps every bit of the look, and turns a confused first visit into an add to bag.

A candy aisle with no sign
The first screen is a grid of bright product tiles, each with a one-line benefit and an add to bag button1. It's on brand and easy to shop. It just never says, in a headline, what the brand is for.
